| Build Your Own Coilovers for as Little as $25 It uses the front shock from a pre-'94 Chevy S-10 pickup and many other GM cars from '73-87. It's about 14" between centers extended and 8-1/2" compressed. The '70-81 Camaro front shock is similar but is 15" OC with a 5-1/4" stroke. If you need something really short like the Mini shock look at the Pinto/MustangII front unit. It's 11-1/2" OC with a 3" stroke. I got the '94-02 Celica coilover conversion kit on eBay for $10 (plus $27 shipping) that's under $10 a wheel. Figure you'll pay $80. The shocks are about $12 a piece. The threaded sleeve is 2" I.D. so it needs spacers to fit the shock body properly. For the ring spacers I'm using sections of waste '81 Celica strut, which are 2" O.D. and 1-3/4" I.D. The spring rates are high and may not be usable. The fronts are 440 lbs./in while the rears are 350. The springs on these cheap kits have a reputation for going soft, so there's hope. The perches are milled for 2-1/2 I.D. springs which are easier to find in the US than 1-7/8". They run $20-25 used. |
